37 KEYS Orchestra students performed in Carnegie Hall, May 2016, with the Suzuki School

The KEYS Orchestra and The KEYS Band

The KEYS Orchestra and the KEYS Concert Band are comprised of Bridgeport school children who are enthusiastic about the opportunity to play in an enriching musical setting. One-to-one lessons give students individualized attention; teaching students to practice teaches them self-discipline and independence; and playing in ensemble permits them to play on a team where they learn from one another and develop life skills like teamwork, socialization, self-control, and preparedness.  Both ensembles accept Bridgeport students, and are non-audition. The ensembles rehearse on Saturdays at the Klein Auditorium in Bridgeport. There is no charge to participate.

The KEYS Orchestra was launched in January 2013 in collaboration with the Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestras as a non-audition strings ensemble. The group’s first performance was at the Klein Auditorium in May 2013. It was a very successful debut that featured 22 violin, viola and cello players, ages 9 to 16. The KEYS Orchestra is now led by Dr. Andrew Smith and faculty from the Suzuki Music Schools of Westport and Orange, and has 40 student musicians.  The KEYS Orchestra is supported in part by a grant from the Amalia and Nicola Giuliani Foundation for Religion and the Arts.

The KEYS Concert Band evolved from a trumpet ensemble, to a 20-student brass/winds/percussion ensemble in Fall 2014.  There are now two levels of KEYS Concert Band, a beginner band led by Joe Kiernan, a KEYS music teacher from the Discovery School, and an advanced band led by Michael Roche, a music teacher from Barnum/Waltersville schools.

The two ensemble programs rehearse from September through May, on Saturdays at the Klein Auditorium, 910 Fairfield Avenue, in Bridgeport.  Orchestra rehearsal is 9:30 - 11:30 am, Beginner Band rehearsal is 11:40 - 12:25, and Advanced Band is 12:30 - 1:45 pm.
