“One program that I’m proud to have as part of the afterschool program is the “KEYS Program”. I have been the site coordinator for the afterschool program for the last four years and every year I have seen the “KEYS Program” grow. It first started with piano and Mrs. Delmonte had about three to five afterschool students. The program has been in such demand that we now have a waiting list. The students now have many opportunities to participate in fine art activities like cello, guitar, keyboard, piano, etc. There are many reasons why the “KEYS Program” is so beneficial for our inner-city students. One is that many of these students do not have the opportunity to partake in instrumental lessons. |
This is due to the high cost, lack of transportation, and facilities where they can be taught a musical instrument. Many of these students are not in the environment where musical education is available or even valued. The “KEYS Program” offers these students a different type of education that will foster and nurture their physical and cognitive development. I’ve seen many students who have a low attention span have the discipline to practice a keyboard for long periods of time. For example, there is a student who could not sit still in his classroom but surprised me when he was able to sit for a half-hour, practicing “Hot Cross Buns” on the guitar.” Sean Ward – Site-Coordinator |

KEYS is a 501(c)3 charitable organization that relies on the generosity of local businesses, foundations and private individuals and does not receive financial support from the Bridgeport Public Schools District or the State of Connecticut. For this reason, the number of children we can teach depends on the amount of funds we raise. | |
