“Although designing lesson plans is challenging, it is very exciting when the first and second graders are able to demonstrate that they really understand what we are teaching them. The students that I have been working with have shown improvement in their ability to clap out rhythms and keep a steady beat. While I am happy to see that they are learning, I am even happier to see that they are excited to learn.’

KEYS Programs

KEYS provides private cello, piano, violin, and classical guitar lessons, taught by experienced instructors, during the school day to Bridgeport children whose families do not have the means to pay for music instruction. KEYS also conducts music awareness, music fundamentals, group recorder, and group choral lessons, all on school grounds, both after-school and during the summer.

KEYS programs, which are offered at Geraldine Johnson School, Beardsley School, Columbus School, Marin School, and (starting this year) the Discovery Magnet School include:

  • The “Music for Life” private lesson program, giving instruction in cello, violin, classical guitar, and piano.
  • Supervised after-school practice programs (“Practice, Practice”).
  • A high school mentoring program, “Fundamentals of Music”, in which music students from area high schools teach music fundamentals and recorder to K-2nd graders.
  • After-school musical drama, and choral activities.
  • Opportunities to perform in recitals and concerts, and to participate in workshops.

In addition to KEYS music teachers, the program relies on a growing number of dedicated volunteers to bring music into the lives of these talented but underserved children.
