KEYS Historic Timeline

Spring 2004: KEYS was founded by Rob Silvan who volunteered to teach piano to 4 students at Columbus School in Bridgeport. Donated keyboards were provided to each student.

2004 - 2005: KEYS was able to hire two professional music teachers and the program expanded to 16 students. The first KEYS recital was held in June 2005.

2005 - 2006: KEYS received instrument donations, individual contributions, and its first grants. Violin instruction was added with a teacher from the Talent Education Suzuki School (TESS), and in Spring 2006 KEYS initiated a program at Beardsley School. KEYS grew to include 23 students.

2006 - 2007: The program expanded to four teachers and introduced cello lessons. KEYS grew to 52 fourth through sixth graders, many of whom now had the benefit of multiple years of instruction. Several scholarships provided the opportunity for students to study during the summer at TESS.

2007 - 2008: KEYS expanded to over 60 students and 6 teachers, and introduced recorder instruction. KEYS facilitated the donation of two pianos, one to each elementary school. The pianos and the musical instruction are a highly visible aspect of school life – both for the participating students and for their schoolmates. Throughout the year, there were several recitals.

2008 - 2009: KEYS added ten 2nd and 3rd graders in Suzuki based piano instruction at Beardsley School; created an after-school program for its middle schoolers at Marin School; started a piano program at Johnson School; started an after-school practice programs for elementary-aged students at Columbus and Beardsley Schools; and began a strings program at Beardsley School. Including group recorder lessons, KEYS served over eighty students.

2009 - 2010: KEYS has created an afterschool musical drama program for kindergarteners and first graders at Beardsley School, initiated a vocal and choral program at Columbus School, has offered Suzuki-based classical guitar at Beardsley School, expanded its recital program, started a drum program, and has begun a mentoring program with high school students from Westport in addition to continuing its previous programming.
